Professional Overview
Current Role at Stanford
Joe Benfield is an Instructional Technologist in EdTech, IRT for the Stanford University School of Medicine. He supports a wide range of educational technology operations, projects, and initiatives in support of teaching, learning, and research.
Joe joined the School of Medicine in 2010 to assist in the launch of the school's state-of-the-art educational facility, the Li Ka Shing Center for Learning and Knowledge. He has also played a primary role in supporting the school's mobile initiative, which included collaborations with the Dean's office, Faculty, medical students, Lane Library, physicians at Stanford Hospital and Clinics, and colleagues within IRT to explore the use of tablet technologies in the medical curriculum.
In the Summer of 2011, he began piloting support for online/hybrid learning, and has since worked to build IRT's operational capacity and expertise in support of the Stanford Medicine Interactive Learning Initiatives (SMILI). This work has involved collaborations both in and outside of SOM, including hybrid approaches to undergraduate medical education, online courses for continuing medical education, online materials for residents and fellows, instructional videos for Khan Academy, educational technology projects with Kigali Medical University, in Gitwe, Rwanda, and MOOCs on Coursera, Class 2 Go, and Venture Lab. Joe also supports classroom technology, Coursework (Sakai), and the LKSC's lecture capture system, Mediaflow.
Professional Interests
I'm broadly interested in the integration and application of technologies to solve problems and create opportunity. In educational technology, this can mean a wide variety of technologies that are ever-changing. Areas of greatest current interest are online learning, mobile devices, educational gaming, electronic texts, classroom technologies, and cloud services. I'm also interested in instructional design, learning theory, and educational research to inform my work as an instructional technologist. More broadly, I'm interested in technology's impact on society at large and how it can facilitate high-quality learning opportunities for anyone, anywhere, at anytime.
