Research InterestThe overarching aim of the Etkin lab is to understand the neural basis of emotional disorders and their treatment, with a particular emphasis on psychotherapy, and to leverage this knowledge to develop novel treatment interventions. Our investigation of psychopathology and treatment is organized around affective neuroscience of emotion regulation. We also use concurrent transcranial magnetic stimulation with fMRI to understand and manipulate activity in defined neural circuits in humans.

Research InterestDr. Humphreys researches interventions for substance abuse and psychiatric disorders. He focuses particularly on evaluating the outcomes of professionally-administered treatments and peer-operated self-help groups (e.g., Alcoholics Anonymous), developing health services research-related applications for innovative qualitative and quantitative research techniques, and analyzing national mental health policy.

Research InterestMy health services research aims at improving processes and outcomes of mental health care for people suffering from post-traumatic stress and other mental disorders. My primary focus is improving processes and outcomes of VA services for veterans with PTSD and other psychiatric disorders. My second emphasis is using telemedicine technologies to expand access to effective mental health care. My third interest is evaluating mental health services following disasters.

Research InterestMy research focuses on evaluation of the efficacy of various psychosocial intervention programs to reduce distress in family caregivers of older adult relatives with Alzheimer's disease or another form of dementia. These programs assess impact on a variety of physiological & psychological variables such as: cortisol level, depression, & anxiety. They are conducted with individuals from diverse ethnic, cultural, and lingusitic backgrounds and are funded by the NIA & the Alzheimer's Assn.

Research InterestI research Applied Personalized Neuroscience focusing on mood, anxiety and attention disorders by discovering novel ways of classifying these psychiatric conditions using human neuroscience. The overarching goal is to apply the findings in clinical practice by identifying treatments best suited to the individual. To achieve this goal, clinic and research collaboration is essential. I rely on technology to integrate multiple measures of behavior, brain function, imaging and genetics.

Research InterestDr. Zeitzer's research concerns examination of human and primate circadian rhythms and sleep; notably, the neural mechanisms that underlie wakefulness and circadian photoreception. He is also involved in collaborative efforts in examining the role of sleep disruption in medical pathologies such as Alzheimer's disease, spinal cord injury, and breast cancer.
